JO. ACLAND MEMORIAL SCULPTING SCHOLARSHIP

An intrinsic part of Minerals to Art, the Limestone Sculpting Symposium is sponsored by Victory Lime Limited, and will be hosted from Saturday February 27th to Friday March 5th in the historic limestone quarry located on Ashburton Gorge Road, a mere five minutes drive from Mount Somers Village.  Visitors are encouraged to come and see the sculptors at work during this week-long Symposium.

Professional New Zealand sculptors will take part in this event with their completed works being on display and available for sale at a Silent Auction, scheduled to take place at the Mount Somers Domain on Sunday March 7, between noon and 3.00 pm.

Applications are invited for the inaugural Jo. Acland Memorial Sculpting Scholarship.

The Scholarship is being offered to artists with some experience in sculpting and a desire to extend their artistic skill in the medium.

The Scholarship has been established by the ‘Minerals to Art’ committee in memory of the late Jo. (Joanna) Acland who was the instigator of the Mount Somers Minerals to Art Sculpting Symposium in 1998, a driving force on the Festival committee since its launching in 1998 and a trustee of the  Minerals to Art Charitable Trust


The recipient will benefit by the following;

The opportunity to work alongside and be guided by a group of invited Master Sculptors at the 2008 Minerals to Art Limestone Sculpting Symposium. This Symposium takes place every second year and takes place in the historic   Vincent Quarry in the Ashburton Gorge, using only hand tools and the highly prized Mount Somers limestone. The recipient will begin working along side the group from Thursday 26th February to Friday 5th March... you will be provided with Limestone to work on during the symposium.

Accommodation for the duration of the symposium and the Festival weekend Thursday 26th February to Sunday 7th March.

The opportunity to sell finished work/s at the silent auction of completed work/s on Sunday 7th March at the two day (Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th) Minerals to Art Festival in Mount Somers.

A financial grant of $ 300.00 towards the recipients costs.

ART EXHIBITION AND COMPETITION

1Our 2010 Forsyth Barr Art Exhibition & Competition is open to artists working in all mediums.

This popular part of our Festival programme provides artists with a great 2opportunity to display their work for the enjoyment of visitors. All art exhibited is for sale. Artists participating in the Forsyth Barr Art Competition, have the chance to win a variety of exciting cash prizes including the newly introduced Ashburton Society of Arts Merit Award of $200. Entries close on Friday February 18, and are limited to two works per artist.
